Check the Rules Before You Ride

An ordered pre-ride check: find the local limit, confirm age and helmet rules, keep one rider per scooter, stay off sidewalks, check the wheels, test the brakes — and never assume the scooter's 160 km/h top end is legal.

Step 1: find the local limit. In Europe e-scooters are usually limited to 20 and 25 km/h. Look up the cap for your road class or city before you leave, and write the number down if you ride the same route daily — the cap can differ between a cycle lane and a mixed-traffic street.

Step 2: confirm your age and helmet requirement. Printed rules on shared scooters include helmet required, licence required and 18+ years old. If the jurisdiction demands a licence, carry it; if the rule says helmet, wear one before you touch the throttle.

Step 3: keep one rider per scooter. Printed rules prohibit double riding. A second passenger changes balance and braking distance, and the 8–11 inch wheels are sized for a single rider at urban speeds.

Step 4: stay off sidewalks. The printed rule is no riding on sidewalks. Choose the cycle lane, the road where permitted, or dismount and push — a sidewalk ride is the fastest way to turn a permitted trip into a prohibited one.

Step 5: check the wheels are 8–11 inches and inflated. Confirm the diameter falls in the 8–11 inch (20–28 cm) band and that both tyres hold pressure. Under-inflated wheels change braking feel and make the rated top speed unpredictable on wet surfaces.

Step 6: test the brakes before merging. Squeeze or press the brake at walking pace, confirm it bites, then accelerate toward — never above — the local cap of 20 or 25 km/h. A brake that only feels right at 160 km/h is irrelevant: you will never be allowed to ride there.

The failure mode this sequence exists to prevent is assuming the scooter's 160 km/h top end is legal. The spec sheet describes what the controller permits; the local cap describes what the street permits. Only the second number is a permission.
